History

The Open Sessions was started in 2012 by Gavin Roche. Together with James Scott, the Open Sessions has hosted hundreds of open mic nights in and around many venues around Brisbane City over the years. The friendly relaxed atmosphere is a great way for new and established performers to perform, support and learn from other performers.

How it works

1. Sign up on the night

Sign up for all open mics are on the night – no booking ahead. Put your name on the chalk board. Come early if you want to play early. If you are a minor accompanied by an adult, we will try to accommodate placing you early. Covers and original welcome at all nights.

2. Be stage ready

Make sure your guitar/equipment is tuned and ready to go. All PA equipment is provided as well as a stage acoustic guitar. We recommend bringing your own of course. Sound and lighting is managed by the host with a quick sound check before you perform.

3. Play & support

Each slot is 15 minutes but sometimes more depending on how busy it is. Photos of your performance are taken and published on our socials for you to share. We encourage performers to stay around and support others. Abusive behaviour will not be tolerated.

Do performers play covers or originals?

You can play covers or originals. Up to you!

How long are open mic sets?

Typically the slots are 15min, but there is some flexibility. On occasion, we have to go to 10min slots to fit everyone when busy.

Are minors allow?

We follow each venue’s rules but yes, as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Please contact us on the day (Jimmy 0413 479 501) to secure your spot so we can ensure to follow the venues liquor licensing restrictions.

Is this for musicians only?

The Open Sessions mostly attract musicians. There are other open mic nights specialising in comedy around the city.

Do performers get paid?

No, but generally venues give a free drink or voucher after your performance. Open mic nights are a stepping stone to paid gigs and a casual night out for musicians.
